C10 is a plain carbon steel with a nominal 0.10% carbon content. It is relatively low strength steel but it may be quenched and tempered for increased strength.


Applications:

  • The low carbon steels, such as C10, are used for applications such as cold headed fasteners and bolts.

Soft Annealing:
  • Heat to 850-950 0C, Cool slowly. This will produce a harness of 90-100HB.

Stress Relieving:
  • Stress relieving to remove machining stresses should be carried out by heating to approx 540 0C, holding for 1-2 hours at heat, followed by air cooling.
  • This operation is performed to reduce distortion during heat treatment

Forging:
  • Hot forming temperature 1299-950 0C.

Machinability:

  • Machinability of C10 steel is fairly good, especially in the cold drawn or cold worked condition.
  • Based upon Carbon steel AISI 1112 as a reference that is considered 100% machinable (easily machined) the C10 steel has a rating of 55%.

Corrosion Resistance:
  • This is a plain carbon steel has no corrosion resistance. It will rust unless protected.

Welding:
  • C10 steel may be welded by all of the standard welding techniques

Cold Working:
  • C10 is easily cold worked by traditional means. Following severe cold working a stress relief, or full, anneal should be performed.

Applications:

Soft Annealing:

EN32 is a carbon case hardening steel. Components when carburized have a core strength range of 430-490 N/mm2 , with a hard wearing surface. It is a popular case hardening steel grade for general engineering, readily machineable and weldeable in its supply condition. EN32 is a low tensile steel suited for lightly stressed components

 

Applications:

  • Commonly used for general engineering lightly stressed applications that are subject to wear, EN32 is suitable for applications such as collets, cams, rollers, bushes, spindles, and gears.

Case Hardening:
  • Blank carburize EN32 at a temperature between 880-930°C. Refine at temperature of 970-900°C, cool in air, oil or water.

Hardening:
  • Harden at a temperature of 760-780°C. Quench in water.

Tempering:
  • Tempering is recommended for stress relief and maximum case toughness. Tempering range from 150-200°C.

Heat Treatment:
  • Heat treatment temperatures, including rate of heating, cooling and soaking times will vary due to factors such as the shape and size of each steel component.
  • Other considerations during the heat treatment process include the type of furnace, quenching medium and work piece transfer facilities.
  • Please consult your heat treatment provider for full guidance on heat treatment of case hardening steel grades.

Forging:
  • Heat slowly and uniformly to 1100°C. After forging cool slowly.

Annealing:
  • Heat uniformly to 700°C. Soak well and cool slowly in the furnace

Welding:
  • Firstly heat to approximately 100-350°C. Use an unalloyed basic electrode, for welding unalloyed structural steels.

Normalising:
  • Normalise at 840-870°C, and cool in air.

Stress Relieving:
  • After rough machining tools should be stress relieved.
  • Soaking time 2 hours after the whole piece has attained a temperature of approximately 675°C.
  • Cool in furnace to approximately 500°C, and then freely in air.

EN36C gives a hard case with a strong core, whilst retaining a remarkable degree of toughness.


Applications:

  • As a carburizing steel grade it is suitable for roller and ball bearings of extra light section, aero plane and motor crankshafts requiring hard surfaces for roller paths, connecting rods with case-hardened ends, as well as highly stressed gudgeon pins, gears and certain types of collets.

Carburizing/ Case Hardening:
  • Case hardening will give a hard wear resisting surface and tough core strength to the steel.
  • Case hardening temperatures range from 860-960°C, followed by rapid quenching which will determine the resulting hardness.

Tempering:
  • For optimum toughness temper at low temperatures for a minimum of 2 hours.
  • The case hardness should be in the region of 60-62HRc.


Softening:

  • If it is necessary to soften the EN36 for machining between the carburising and subsequent heat treatment stages, heat to 640-650°C.
  • Soak at this temperature for 1 to 2 hours and cool slowly in the furnace or in air.

Heat Treatment:
  • Heat treatment temperatures, including rate of heating, cooling and soaking times will vary due to factors such as the shape and size of each EN36 steel component.

En 353 steel has carbon content of 0.17% and the most common form of steel as it’s provides material properties that are acceptable for many automobile applications such as heavy duty gear, shaft, pinion, cam shafts, gudgeon pins [1,8].

 

Chemical Analysis:
  • In order to ensure the material of the specimen is done with help of the optical emission spectroscope (OES).
  • The result is obtain from the chemical analysis, carbon – 0.171 %, silicon – 0.3 %, manganese – 0.56 %, phosphorus – 0.012 %, sulphur – 0.13 %, Chromium – 0.953 %, Nickel – 0.989 %, molybdenum – 0.16 % and remaining percentage is iron respectively.
  • A sample of 30 × 10 mm is polished using 60 grit papers and two sparks is introduced on the surface to find the chemical composition of the material.
  • After ensuring the chemical composition, the raw material is machined according to the dimension for various tests.


Applications:

  • Machining components, Gears.

Hardness:
  • Vickers hardness measurement is done on the specimen as per the IS 1501-2002 procedures by using Vickers hardness tester (MH6).
  • Hardness measurement is made with 200 g loads, dwell time of 10 seconds and diamond indenter is used for test.
  • The impression is done on the circular faces at the centre of the specimen.
  • The hardness values are taken corresponding to the diagonal length of the indentation.
  • Two samples (i.e. BHT and AHT) and five readings are taken from the each sample from case to core.
  • The average value is calculated from five readings. The hardness values of BHT (case and core) samples are, 193.7 and 201.8 HV respectively.
  • The hardness values of AHT (case and core) samples are 684.5 and 387.8 HV respectively.
  • It is clearly noticed that the base material (BHT) has the low hardness.
  • The AHT specimen has high hardness when compared to the BHT sample.

Analysis:
  • X-Ray Diffractometer is one of the most powerful techniques for material structural analysis.
  • Bruker AXS D8 Advance X-Ray diffractometer fit with vertical goniometers, low and high temperature attachment.
  • The angle range is 360°, the maximum usable angular is 3° to 135° and wavelength is 1.5406 Å. X-ray diffraction analysis is carried out under the following condition: Cu radiation, 40 KV voltage, 35 mA current and maximum angular speed 30°/s. When the x-ray is passed into the substrate and it is reflected back to the detector the angle made by the reflected ray to the substrate is denoted as

Heat Treatment Procedure for EN353:
  • Carburising Pack, salt or gas carburize at 910C, holding for sufficient time to develop the required case depth and carbon content, Slow cool from carburizing temperature and re-heat to 870C, hold until temperature is uniform throughout the section, quench as required in water, oil or air cool.

C-20 is an unalloyed low carbon mild steel grade supplied as a hot rolled or bright drawn finish bar. As a low carbon steel grade it provides low strength with good machinability and is suitable for welding. Mild Steel, fairly easy to machine but with a tendency to ‘rip’ if unlubricated. It is very easy to weld and is used as a more general purpose steel for multiple applications.


Common Uses:
  • Lightly stressed bolts, fixings, shafts, spacers, hubs and bushings. Bracketry, linkages and base plates would be fine to produce using EN3.

Not Suitable For:
  • Stress components such as torque loaded shafts, high bending forces and shock loading.
  • The material will yield and distort under stress conditions, bending before shear.

Machining:
  • Surface ‘ripping’ is more evident in EN3 so lubrication is essential.
  • Fairly high surface speeds should be used with moderate feeds.
  • Screw cutting is easy with cutting oil and achieving a fine finish is achieved with slight polishing.
  • Very nice to weld with good flow and strength.

Annealing:
  • C-20 is commonly supplied bright drawn or as rolled. If annealing is required heat to 880-910°C, furnace cool.

Hardening:
  • As a low carbon steel C-20 is not ideally suited for heat treatment (EN8 or EN9 may be a better suited option).
  • If hardening is required heat to a temperature of 880-910°C. Quench in water and temper.

  • When hardening C-20 heat treatment temperatures, including rate of heating, cooling and soaking times will vary due to factors such as the shape and size of each component.

C1018 is a general purpose low carbon steel with good case hardening qualities. It has a higher manganese content than certain other low carbon grades, such as 1020. With higher manganese, 1018 is better steel for carburized parts, since it produces a harder and more uniform case. It also has higher mechanical properties and better machinability due to the cold drawing process. Most 1018 is produced by cold drawing. In this process, oversize hot rolled bars, which have been cleaned of scale, are drawn through dies to the required size. Cold drawing increases tensile and yield strength but decreases ductility. Cold drawing also increases torsional strength, surface hardness and wear resistance. Due to size limitations of the cold drawing process, large diameter bars are generally turned and polished, the hot roll rounds usually machine turned, rather than drawn, then abrasively polished. C1018, available in rounds, flats, squares and hexagons, has a relatively large size selection.


Applications:

  • 1018 has a wide variety of applications.
  • It is used for parts requiring cold forming, such as crimping, swaging or bending.
  • For severe bends, stress relieving may be necessary to prevent cracking. It is highly suitable for carburized parts, such as gears, ratchets, worms, pinions, pins, chain pins, dowels, machine parts, non-critical components of tool and die sets, tool holders, etc.
  • It is used when good workability is required, on parts requiring threading, drilling, punching and machining. It is extensively used for mounting plates, spacers and fixtures.
  • C1018 is suitable for all applications that do not require the greater strength of high carbon and alloy steels.

Machinability and Weldability:
  • Machinability is rated at 78% of B1112. Average cutting speed 130 ft/min.
  • This grade is easily welded by all welding processes including gas, air, and submerges arc, and the resultant welds and joints are of extremely high quality.
  • Preheat and post-weld heating is generally not necessary.

C-1020 is a low hardenability and low tensile carbon steel with Brinell hardness of 119-235 and tensile strength of 410-790 MPa. It has high machinability, high strength, high ductility and good weldability. It is normally used in turned and polished or cold drawn condition. Due to its low carbon content, it is resistant to induction hardening or flame hardening. Due to lack of alloying elements, it will not respond to nitriding. However, carburization is possible in order to obtain case hardness more than Rc65 for smaller sections that reduces with an increase in section size. Core strength will remain as it has been supplied for all the sections. Alternatively, carbon nitriding can be performed, offering certain benefits over standard carburizing. C1020 offers better machinability than the normal low carbon commercial alternative of A36. A low carbon, general purpose, special quality machinery steel, suitable for ordinary hammer forging and case hardening. Readily weldable.

 

Machining:

  • In the cold drawn or turned and polished condition, AISI 1020 steel has high machinability.
  • As per recommendations of machine manufacturers, AISI 1020 steel can be used for drilling, turning, milling and tapping operations using suitable feeds, tool type and speeds.

Weldability:
  • AISI 1020 can be welded by performing the most common welding processes.
  • In the cold drawn or turned and polished condition, it has better weldability.
