Plastic Mould Steel grade P20SP20S P20+S Tool Steel P20+S is a high tensile alloy tool steel grade supplied in the hardened and tempered condition. With its higher sulphur content it offer better machinability than P20 plastic mould tool steel grade.

Application:
  • Tool steel P20+S is ideally suited for the production of moulds where improved machinability is required.
  • Typical applications include bolsters and injection moulds, die holders and zinc die casting dies.
  • P20S is a versatile plastic mould tool steel with high tensile characteristics suitable for many other applications such as shafts and wear strips

Forging:
  • Heat the P20S component slowly, allow sufficient time for the steel to become heated through.
  • Begin to forge at 1050°C.

Stress Relieving:
  • When dies made from P20S are heavily machined, we recommend stabilising the steel just before finish machining in order to relieve machining strains.
  • Heat up to 460-500°C, soak well and cool in air

Annealing:
  • Heat uniformly to 710-740°C. Soak well, cool slowly in the furnace

Tempering:
  • When tempering P20S heat the steel uniformly, soaking at the tempering temperature for at least one hour per 25mm of section. Allow to cool in still air

 

Car bursing/case Hardening:

  • Tools produced from tool steel P20+S may be case hardened, which can achieve a surface hardness of between 55 to 59 Rockwell C.

Nitriding:
  • Tools machined from P20S pre-hardened can be nitrided to give a wear resistant surface case of approximately 60 Rockwell C hardness with a case depth of .35mm to 0.5mm.
  • Nitriding also increases the corrosion resistance of P20S.
  • After nitriding at 525°C in ammonia gas the surface hardness of the tool will be approximately 650HV.

 

Flame/ Induction Hardening:

  • Induction or flame hardening of will achieve a hardness of 50 to 55HRc.
  • It is preferable to air cool, though smaller components may require forced cooling. Temper immediately after hardening.

Heat Treatment:
  • Heat treatment temperatures, including rate of heating, cooling and soaking times will vary due to factors such as the shape and size of each steel component.
  • Other considerations during the heat treatment process include the type of furnace, quenching medium and work piece transfer facilities.

P20 Tool Steel:
  • Low-carbon mold steels or group P steels are of different types that include P2, P3, P4, P5, P6, P20, and P21 steels.
  • Chromium and nickel are the main alloying elements found in group P steels.
  • P20 tool steels are nitrided or carburized.
  • These steels are capable of being machined into complex and large dies and molds.
  • P20 steels are mostly used in the carburized condition.
  • The presence of chromium and nickel enhances the toughness and hardness of P20 steels.

Principal Design Features:
  • This alloy is in the category generally labeled as Mold Steels.
  • Nickel and chromium are the alloying elements for hardness and toughness.
  • This alloy is most often used in the carburized condition.

Tempering:
  • P20 tool steels are tempered at 482-593°C (900 to 1100°F) for a Rockwell C hardness of 37 to 28.

Annealing:
  • Annealing takes place at 760-788°C (1400 to 1450°F) and then the steels are cooled slowly in the furnace at a temperature less than 4°C (40°F) per hour.

Cold Working:
  • P20 tool steels are capable of being readily cold worked by using conventional tooling methods with the alloy in the annealed condition.

Forging:
  • P20 tool steels are forged at 1093°C (2000°F) down to 899°C (1650°F).
  • Forging below 871°C (1600°F) is not recommended for these steels.

Welding:
  • Conventional methods are used for welding of P20 tool steels.

Heat Treatment:
  • P20 tool steels are heated to 871-899°C (1600-1650°F) in the carburizing medium during the carburizing process.
  • After being carburized, these steels are heated to 816-871°C (1500-1600°F) in order to be hardened and then held for 15 minutes and finally oil quenched.

Applications:
  • P20 tool steels are used for low temperature applications that include injection molds and die casting dies.

  • Begin to forge at 1050°C. Do not forge below 930°C reheating if necessary. After forging, cool very slowly.
  • Tool steel P20+S is ideally suited for the production of moulds where improved machinability is required.
  • Typical applications include bolsters and injection moulds, die holders and zinc die casting dies.
  • P20S is a versatile plastic mould tool steel with high tensile characteristics suitable for many other applications such as shafts and wear strips.

Stress Relieving:
  • When dies made from P20S are heavily machined, we recommend stabilising the steel just before finish machining in order to relieve machining strains.
  • Heat up to 460-500°C, soak well and cool in air.

Annealing:
  • Heat uniformly to 710-740°C. Soak well, cool slowly in the furnace.

Aisi Stavex:

  • Whilst STAVAX ESR is recommended for all types of moulding tools, its special properties make it particularly suitable for moulds with the following demands:
  • • Corrosion/staining resistance, i.e. for mould-ing of corrosive materials, e.g. PVC, acetates, and for moulds subjected to humid working/storage conditions.
  • • Wear resistance, i.e. for moulding abrasive/ filled materials, including injection-moulded thermosetting grades. STAVAX ESR is recom¬mended for moulds with long production runs, e.g. disposable cutlery and containers.
  • • High surface finish, i.e. for the production of optical parts, such as camera and sunglasses lenses, and for medical containers, e.g. syringes, analysis phials.

Heat Treatment:
  • Protect the steel and heat through to 890°C (1630°F). Then cool in the furnace at 20°C (40°F) per hour to 850°C (1560°f), then at 10°C (20°F) per hour to 700°C (1290°F), then freely in air.

Stress-relieving:
  • After rough machining the tool should be heated through to 650°C (1200°F), holding time 2 hours.
  • Cool slowly to 500°C (930°F), then freely in air.

Hardening:
  • Preheating temperature: 600-850°C (1110-1560°F)
  • Austenitizing temperature: 1020-1050°C (1870-920°F), but usually 1020°C-1030°C (1870-1885°F).

Tensile strength at room temperature:
  • The tensile strength values are to be considered as approximate only.
  • All samples were taken from a bar (in the rolling direction) 25 mm (1″) diameter.
  • Hardened in oil from 1025 ±10°C (1880 ±20°F) and tempered twice to the hardness indicated.
